Joseph Cordeiro Scholarship for Students Studying String Instruments (SAC)

  • freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time but does not have to be a music major or minor
  • member of University Orchestra
  • proficient in or studying strings (piano or harp are not included in the string category)
  • good academic standing
  • entering freshman must submit letter of recommendation from high school orchestra director. Formal application and solo audition tape required; must be willing to give live audition if requested

Performance Guidelines
Piano: Two pieces required (at least one memorized): 1) An allegro sonata movement from
Beethoven, Mozart or Haydn OR Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach, 2) Any piece composed in the
Romantic or Contemporary Era. Any repertoire substitutions should be addressed PRIOR to the
audition date.
Strings: a 5-10 minute performance of two contrasting styles or movements of Class A-level
solo literature or above. Memorization is optional. Accompaniment is not required, but is
encouraged.*
Winds: a 5-10 minute performance of two contrasting styles or movements of Class A-level
solo literature or above. Memorization is optional. Accompaniment is not required, but is
encouraged.*
Percussion: a 5-10 minute performance of Class A-level solo literature or above on snare drum
OR timpani, AND a keyboard percussion instrument. Memorization is optional.
Accompaniment is not required, but is encouraged.*
Voice: a 5-10 minute performance of contest-quality solo literature. If the length of one piece is
less than five minutes, a second piece of contrasting tempo, style or language is preferred.
Memorization is optional, but suggested. Vocalists must provide their own accompanist.*
All auditionees will be expected to demonstrate sight-reading abilities

  • A list of local accompanists is available upon request from the Department of Music.
    All auditionees must make their own arrangements with their accompanist of choice.
