Richard Beck

Dr. Richard “Dick” Beck began his tenure in UWL’s Art Department in 1959 and retired in 1992. He earned several degrees including a B.S. from Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee, a B.F.A from Layton School of Art, an M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an M.F.A. from Notre Dame University.

Students remember him for his “ready wit, pleasant manner and his solid foundation in his subject area.” Dick was a constant scholar and an inveterate traveler who made numerous trips to American and European museums and points of historical and cultural significance. His many trips and observations enriched his classroom presentations. In his retirement years, Dick was particularly passionate about participating in Elderhostel programs.

Dr. Beck passed away on April 13, 2010. He was 83 years old.

Impact

Dr. Beck named the UWL Foundation as a beneficiary of his estate with a gift of more than $40,000 to establish the Richard G. Beck Scholarship. This permanent endowment will provide an annual scholarship to an outstanding junior art major or majors. Dr. Beck’s legacy will continue at UWL.
