Lora Greene
Lora Greene was a College registrar, Coast Guard lieutenant, educator, businesswoman, and world traveler. To say the life of former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse registrar Lora Greene was a varied one would be an understatement. Miss Greene, who died at age 82, believed in getting the most out of life as her numerous jobs and hobbies illustrated. A Brandon, Wis., native, Miss Greene earned a degree in commercial ed education from Whitewater State College and taught in rural, elementary and high schools in Wisconsin before joining the La Crosse staff in 1928. She took a leave of absence in 1931 and 1932 to earn her master’s degree at Columbia Unversity in New York. In 1943, Miss Greene joined the C2 st Guard and was commissioned as a. junior grade. She spent the next three years in New England before returning to her post as registrar.
She retired from the position of Registrar in 1961 but continued on the faculty as a part-time instructor. The former registrar also owned and operated Miss Green’s Campus Shop on Campbell Road, which eventually moved downtown. When she wasn’t at the University or her dress shop, chances were she was involved in one of her two favorite hobbies: travel and bridge playing. Her travels included a six-month trip around the world and an excursion through Europe. Miss Greene served as an advisor of the Newman Club for many years. She was president of the state organization which honored her with its achievement award. Less than a year after she retired she was honored by the Wisconsin Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers for her 30 years of service at UW-L.
Impact
Lora Greene established this scholarship fund with an estate gift upon her death in 1981. Her scholarship is awarded to a woman entering her senior year and has a grade point average above 3.5. The Ariens Foundation of Brillion, WI. has provided additional gifts to permanently endow the Lora Greene Scholarship Fund and to honor her legacy at UW La Crosse. The Ariens Foundation is dedicated to providing financial assistance to young people who show a desire to continue their formal education.
