Judith L. Kuipers
Judy Kuipers served UWL as chancellor from 1991 to 2000. During her nine years, she provided extraordinary leadership to the University and to the La Crosse community. Her dedication and energy were significant factors in improving and enhancing the academic quality of the UWL programs. Her spirit and concern for the La Crosse community were demonstrated by her active participation on volunteer boards such as the Chamber of Commerce, the La Crosse Symphony, the Gundersen Lutheran Foundation, Family & Children’s Services, and Rotary. Her commitment to improving the lives of many people was exemplified by her leadership in the establishment of the Health Science Center, a cooperative effort between UWL, Western Technical College, Gundersen, and Mayo.
She said, “thinking about leaving has been a very difficult process for me as I care deeply about UWL and the many fine colleagues and students who comprise the academic community here.” She left UWL to become president of the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara, CA.
Friends and colleagues established the Judith L. Kuipers Scholarship in 2000 to honor Judy’s commitment to UWL.
