Genevieve Carnes

Genevieve Kronschnabel came to La Crosse from Appleton to be a physical education teacher. She earned her B.E. in 1936 from La Crose State Teachers College. She was active on campus and participated in Alpha Phi Pi, Delta Psi Kappa, W.R.A., Orchesis, and the Phys Ed Club.

113 students graduated in the class of 1936: forty-seven of them were physical education majors. The May 15, 1936, Racquet reported_ "While somewhat smaller in number than the class of last year, this season’s grads are not lacking in abilities and character. They have fought their way through college, through four of the hardest years of the Depression. Theirs is a real victory._ In the 1938 Racquet, there was an article about “La Crosse Students Have Many Interests.” It was reported that “Genevieve Kronschnabel and Le Nore Morehouse attracted a lot of attention last summer by taking an 800-mile trip from the source of the Mississippi River. Their trip lasted 24 days and included many interesting experiences.”

Following graduation, Genevieve began her career as a physical education teacher in Appleton. In 1941, Genevieve married alum Clark Carnes, ‘37. She continued her career serving as the women’s physical education director for Appleton and Neenah high schools. Clark and Genevieve moved to East Aurora, NY, in 1961 where Clark worked for Graphic Controls Corporation. Clark and Genevieve raised three sons. Genevieve passed away in 1981.

Impact

This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 and will continue to support scholarships for exercise and sports majors for generations to come.
